Great Family Activity
Participate in an actual excavation in underground caves from the time of the Maccabees and tour through the ancient subterranean city of Maresha. Excavations are done at the Hellenistic or Second Temple Period.
Begin with the excavation and then continue on a tour of the cave complexes where you may see an olive press, water cisterns and columbaria. Finish at the pottery shed where you will see examples of the most important and rare finds.
The wonderful mix of historical, educational and hands-on activities makes it an ideal experience for families- highlight of your trip to Israel!
The Dig is available all year round – Rain or Shine because the dig takes place underground. The cave tour which follows the dig, involves a bit of crawling into cave complexes. Participants who do not want to participate in the cave tour can wait in the pottery shed which is shaded.
What To Wear?
Wear clothes that can get dusty or dirty. Closed shoes are required. No Crocs or sandals.
